Brighton Marina is an artificial marina built largely during the 1970s. It is now the largest Marina in the UK, with over 1500 yacht berths.
The idea of a yacht harbour was first mooted in the 1960s and funding was eventually found, after two public enquiries and passing of The Brighton Marina Act of Parliament. Work began in the winter of 1971, with the Marina being opened to boats in 1978.
The Marina also now has an accompanying on shore development including shops and restaurants, flats and houses. There is a 1600 space car park with a cinema complex completed in 1988. More recent development proposals have met with considerable local opposition to excessive building that might ruin cliff and sea views, ruining Brighton's skyline.
For sailors, there are a variety of berthing options, including yearlong berthing as well as marine services including chandlers, engineers, riggers, brokers and shipwrights all on site. Petrol, diesel and CCTV security are all always available.
Brighton Marina also hosts The Big Splash, which is a weekend of street performers, fireworks and aqua themed entertainment at the culmination of the Brighton Festival and Fringe.
The Marina is located 2 miles to the east of New Steine Hotel, along
the sea front. You can even do most of the journey by walking on the beach.
