07/05 – Brighton Dome – Orchestra Baobab
7:30pm – Last November, Orchestra Baobab unveiled 50 Ans (50 Years), the first track from the Senegalese outfit’s forthcoming album that marks a half-century of their trademark fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, pop hooks and native griot storyteller tradition.
Formed during the late sixties in a Dakar nightclub built around a baobab tree, the nine-piece group have developed a unique style based around their own cultural mix that they have since taken across the globe, including London’s Barbican Centre. Nowadays, surviving members are joined by a younger generation of musicians – lyrics to 50 Ans were written by veteran drummer Taga Koité while the number’s main vocals come via his son Papino.With fresh energy, Orchestra Baobab continue to develop their joyous fusion of intense polyrhythms, infectious brass arrangements and captivating melodies.

With advance reviews of their forthcoming tenth studio album, ‘AUDIO VERTIGO’, praising it as ‘suitably landmark’ (MOJO) and ‘top stuff’ (UNCUT), elbow’s first arena tour since 2018, the AUDIO VERTIGO tour, marks a moment for the band to deliver the perfect show in celebration as lead singer Guy Garvey explains:

Newly appointed Baroque Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall Solomon’s Knot is considered ‘one of the UK’s most innovative and imaginative ensembles’. Class 1685 features three composers, each of them a defining character of the Baroque, all born in 1685. In some ways they can be seen as standing for three different national styles: Italian, German, and English. Bach’s Mass in A major combines ancient choral polyphony with modern aria forms which were fashionable in the opera house and the cantata. Handel’s Dixit Dominus of 1707 is a firework of Latin religious fervour, and will be sung one-to-a-part and, as ever, by heart by the singers of Solomon’s Knot and is in contrast to the more lyrical yearning of Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater for 10 voices and continuo.

In the 1770s the pioneering musicologist Charles Burney embarked upon a musical grand tour of Europe, seeking out all the latest continental innovations.
In a new collaboration with Brighton Early Music Festival, BREMF Live! members Apollo’s Cabinet bring their signature mix of acting, dancing, poetry and silliness to bear on a kaleidoscopic recreation of Burney’s travels, with music from every country he visited, intercut with readings from his journals. In Association with Brighton Early Music Festival.

Film, theatre and live music combine in an extraordinary portrait of a city. ‘a clever play on fact and fiction, documentary theatre and music. [It] confronts you with fundamental questions about how we inject meaning into everyday life by fabricating stories.’ De Morgen
The Making of Berlin sees the innovative Belgian theatre and filmmakers attempt to fulfil the dream of Friedrich Mohr, a former employee of the Berliner Philharmonika orchestra who, towards the end of the Second World War, was involved in an audacious scheme: to present a live radio broadcast of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung from seven separate bunkers across the city.
As BERLIN work with Mohr to try and restage this undertaking, followed by a documentary maker who is tracking their progress, they come to realise that the story is not as straightforward as it seems. Instead it reveals itself to be about one of the ‘unbrave’ who failed to stand up for his colleagues when it counted. How far could they-or should they-support his version of the truth as an old man seeks atonement?
This is the UK premiere of The Making of Berlin, described by de Standaard as ‘overwhelming from start to finish’ and one of its top ten productions of the year.

The Motel Life and Lean on Pete were turned into feature films, released in 2012 and 2017 respectively. The former starred Kris Kristofferson and Emile Hirsch and the latter, starred Charlie Plummer, Chloe Sevigny and Steve Buscemi, and was adapted and directed by Andrew Haigh. Vlautin lives outside of Portland, Oregon and is the founding member of the bands Richmond Fontaine and The Delines.

Jack Black and Kyle Gass, the dynamic duo behind Tenacious D, formed the Greatest Band in the World in the late ’90s in Los Angeles.
Their journey includes a hit HBO variety series in 1999, a Platinum-certified self-titled album in 2001, and a feature film, “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny,” in 2006. Their 2012 album, “Rize of the Fenix,” earned a Grammy nomination.
In 2013, they founded the Festival Supreme, a music and comedy festival in LA featuring top acts. Tenacious D also won a Grammy in 2014 for Best Metal Performance.
In 2023, they rocked Las Vegas with sold-out shows, launched “The SpicyMeatball Tour,” released a hit song “Video Games” and a viral cover of “Wicked Game.” With 1million Instagram followers, Tenacious D remains the Greatest Band That Ever Played on Planet Earth, selling out shows worldwide.

The Ensemble Category winners in last year’s Royal Over-Seas League Competition, the Fibonacci Quartet pairs works by Mozart and Mendelssohn, composed over 50 years apart but equally daring in their use of dissonance and chromaticism. While Mozart’s third ‘Haydn’ Quartet pays witty homage to his older friend and mentor, already dubbed ‘the father of the string quartet’, Mendelssohn’s musical swansong expresses his raw grief at his sister Fanny’s sudden death.

26/05 – Komedia – Aidan Goatley
TIME:8:30pm (Doors 8:15pm). PRICE: Advance Price Ticket: £10.00 – Aged 18, comedian Aidan Goatley woke up with his first tattoo which prominently displayed the name ‘Edith’ and he has no idea why.
Who was Edith? After 34 years, Aidan thinks he’s found the answer in a story that involves, self-harm, survival and rather surprisingly, too many Jason Statham films.
The Winner of the ‘Best Comedy Show’ at the 2023 Buxton fringe and creator of the worldwide fringe hit ’10 Films with my Dad’ returns with a brand-new show which talks openly about a difficult subject while adding enough jokes to show how he presents ‘positive heart-warming comedy like no one else is doing.’
26/05 – Roberto Fonseca ‘La Gran Diversión’

+ Support from Alvorada – Famed Cuban jazz pianist returns to Brighton with an old-school twist. Since his days as an integral member of Buena Vista Social Club’s touring band, Roberto Fonseca has shown huge respect for Cuba’s musical roots while following his own varied path.
Touring with an 8-piece band, this popular and gifted pianist now delves into the period when his Caribbean homeland first made waves overseas – in 1930s Paris. Current album La Gran Diversion takes us back to La Cabane Cubaine, the French capital’s hottest cabaret, where it’s cool, mixed audience first danced to Cuba’s sultry, sensual beats.
Support comes from Alvorada, with their lively melodies and danceable Brazilian grooves.

27/05 – Flamenco Komedia

Flamenco charms all kinds of audiences, but it is also very technical and intransigent art due to its complex rhythmic and visual language. In light of this, Lourdes Fernandez and her Company presents “Raices”, an heterogenous interpretation of the art, drawing on but departing from traditional flamenco in search of an eclectic style of music inspired by Folk, Andalusian Copla, Jazz, and other styles. During the show, the audience will enjoy carefully studied and rehearsed acts but the attentive spectator will be able to capture original moments of improvisation.
Hence, the magic of Raices… the inspiration that unfolds and dies… unique therefore unrepeatable… where each viewer can experience the performance through their most personal feelings.

Menagerie is a storytelling/comedy show about the collectibles in our life. Like Noah’s Ark taking the best pair of every species, this show unpicks the best of each season of life, of work, of marriage, of having kids and then pulling ones own teeth out over frozen shoulders, diminishing bank accounts and sanity.
As a South-indian married to a north-indian, who is her diametric opposite, in waistline, temper and sageliness, Anu Vaidyanathan tries to unlearn the lessons. All bad romantic Hollywood movies have infested her brain with, and see life for what it is – a giant, unavoidable wedgie when one is on stage about to accept a lifetime achievement award.
